From Our President Harry

I’d like to start out with a round of applause to our community in the South Bay for your support in our South Bay Historical Society and Chula Vista Heritage Museum. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to tell you how great it is seeing people at our exhibits in the libraries and having people come to our speaker events. A dream came true by having the showing of Heaven in Auschwitz back in April with the film directors. With a packed house in our audience from all over San Diego County we were able to show that Holocaust awareness has been a priority. Learning the lessons from the past has helped us shape our future. Andy Yuen gave an outstanding presentation telling us about the wildlife in San DIego County and answering questions. I can say that I have missed our community coming together and it just felt great.

As RUTH Remember Us The Holocaust will be coming down at the end of the month we are looking forward to our Filipino Community presenting an exhibit that will feature the people, culture and accomplishments. The exhibit taught us many lessons. Having our creator and curator, Sandra Scheller, giving personal tours brought a special touch to the exhibit answering questions from the eyes of a child, of a survivor. Sandra received the first annual Peace Maker Award from the San Diego Coastal Rotary. The exhibit went on to receive international acclaim. It didn’t stop there, Sandra and I helped launch an on line program called Our Lives Our Future that featured Holocaust survivors and community leaders which now has a total viewing of 100,000 hits. Our social media platforms brought more awareness to our exhibit and to our organizations and meeting new and old members has been wonderful for all.

Education was a huge focus as we saw schools come to the exhibit and learn about the Holocaust survivors that settled in the South Bay. Many students, educators, and organizations toured the exhibit and learned about the horrors of the Holocaust. We had visits from numerous retirement facilities which proves it is never too late to educate. They left shaken and pledged to never let such a horrific event happen again. You are invited to join Mayor Casillas-Salas and guest speaker Lothian Skelton, wife of Red Skelton at the final viewing of Ruth: Remember Us The Holocaust. The closing brunch with featured speakers will take place on Sunday, August 21, 2022 at 11:00am at the Civic Center Branch Library. The brunch will be Kosher, catered by Chabad of Chula Vista. Donations will benefit the South Bay Historical Society. The cost for the brunch is $100. Thank you for your most generous donation and presence at this special event. For questions , special requests, or sponsorship opportunities, please contact
Sandy Scheller at sscheller@cox.net.

Richard Carrico has been rescheduled for September 22, 2022 at 5:30pm Civic Center Library auditorium. Through documents from the 1770’s and decades of research Carrico will take us back to the 1775 insurrection by South Bay Tipai villages on the San Diego Mission. Look forward to meeting you at one of our upcoming events.
